On 9.7.1853 Commodore Mathew C. Perry entered Tokyo Bay. (kurofune raikō, "Arrival of the Black Ships") It was a mainly diplomatic but if required, military expedition to the Tokugawa Shogunate, by the United States Navy, promoted by US President Millard Fillmore. Japan than was isolated to the outside world by already 220 years and the goal of this expedition was the establishment of diplomatic relations and negotiation of trade agreements. The carefully prepared Perry Expedition was a great success, established diplomatic relations between Japan and the western World. It eventually led to the collapse of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate and the restoration of the Emperor. Japan built the Odaiba Island in 1853-54 to be prepared for an invasion of Foreigners.
